Hi, I'm António Q Fernandes.
Design at the Intersection of Physical and Digital
I design complete product experiences for expert users in technical domains—from aircraft cabins and adaptive cockpit systems to industrial control interfaces and enterprise platforms. With a background in mechatronics engineering (BEng, King's College London) and dual masters from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, I approach design problems with both creative vision and technical depth. As a Design London Fellow, I was awarded Imperial College Business School's Best Business Plan Award, launching my career bridging innovation, design, and engineering.
Beyond aviation, I've designed control systems for the world's largest metal 3D printer (Adira), developed design systems for enterprise aquaculture platforms, and worked across automotive, maritime, and B2B software domains.
From Automotive to Aviation
My journey began in Portugal's automotive industry at CEIIA (Centre for Excellence and Innovation in the Automotive Industry), where I helped develop the first Portuguese sports car, the Vinci GT. This foundation in physical product design and engineering led me to the Royal College of Art, where I focused on experimental design processes, gestural interaction, and experience design.
Working Approach
I thrive in constraint-driven environments, often working as a solo designer or leading small teams. Whether it's safety-critical aviation systems, complex industrial interfaces, or data-heavy enterprise platforms, I focus on understanding expert users, making thoughtful trade-offs, and delivering products that work in the real world—not just in ideal conditions. My work revolves around a fascination with the boundaries between form, perception, and interaction. I believe the best solutions emerge when we consider the complete product experience: physical ergonomics, digital interfaces, user workflows, and the stories products tell through their design.
Currently
Based in Horta, Faial (Azores, Portugal), I work with clients globally on complex technical products. Previously Head of UX/UI at Longline Environment and designer at Almadesign, I'm now available for consulting and full-time opportunities with aviation, industrial, or technical product companies.
